When Phyllis found out about her dad being Phil Robertson, we started connecting with the family. I reached out to Lisa Robertson and asked if there was any way Phil could take her out on the land with him. I knew that would be special for her, walking around on the land, just being outdoors together.
Well, when we got down there to visit, Phil actually did that. He took her and me out on his boat through the backwaters of his duck hunting land. It was a really special moment, and I knew I wanted to capture it in a painting.
But more than just that one moment, I wanted to paint who Phil really is. I painted the baptism painting, “Newness of Life” and this painting. I feel like these two paintings capture Phil Robertson. There's this old classic painting called Man of the Sea. Phil Robertson is the "Man of the River". That's what I call this one.
