Phil's Lanyard, Fine Art Print

Up until this past year, this lanyard put in plenty of overtime in the duck blinds. It was a faithful companion to an even greater man. You could even say these small calls are the stepping stones of a legacy on a rope.

This painting depicts Phil’s actual duck-call lanyard. I had borrowed the lanyard after asking if I could photograph it. I told him I wanted to take it outside, lay it on one of his tables, and shoot a few reference photos. He was very reluctant—he never lets that lanyard out of his sight. But eventually, he agreed.

Every call on the lanyard—Wood Duck, Mallard Drake, Mallard Hen, Teal, Gadwall Drake, and Pintail—is specific to the ducks hunted on his land. His lanyard represents more than duck season to me. It reflects determination, hard work, passion, and a visual example of what happens when you take a leap of faith and do what you love.
